Record platform earnings, sponsorships, affiliate fees and commercial payments made in products or services. A gifted item can need a different assessment from an unsolicited personal gift. Keep the agreement and valuation evidence rather than looking only at bank deposits.
Identify the different income streams
Advertising revenue, paid partnerships, affiliate commissions, subscriptions and direct customer payments may all need considering. A product supplied in exchange for promotional work can also have a value for tax purposes.
HMRC's online-platform guidance explains that where gifts or services are received instead of money, their value is relevant. Distinguish a commercial exchange from a genuinely unrelated personal gift; the description used by a brand does not settle the treatment.
Keep evidence behind each collaboration
Save contracts, emails, campaign briefs, invoices, payout statements and details of non-cash items. Note what you agreed to provide, when you received the consideration and how a reasonable value was established.
For example, a hotel stay provided in exchange for promotional posts is not automatically invisible to tax because no cash changed hands. The facts of the arrangement and any genuinely allowable costs need separate review.
Platform payouts can hide deductions
A platform may retain fees before transferring money. Keep the full statement so gross receipts and relevant costs can be reconciled. Avoid counting the bank payout and the underlying platform sale as two separate items of income.
Business and personal use also need distinguishing for phones, equipment, travel and subscriptions. Creating content during a personal holiday does not automatically turn every holiday cost into a business deduction.
Check the reporting route
The trading allowance, Self Assessment registration and MTD eligibility have different tests. If a platform reports information to HMRC, that does not automatically calculate or pay your tax for you.
Tell TaxSimba about all platforms, brand arrangements and other income, including employment. The accountant can confirm the appropriate service and what records are needed. Where foreign payments or complex arrangements are involved, establish the scope before purchase rather than assuming a simple-return package covers every issue.
Check the home nation used for your tax calculation
Tell the accountant whether you live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and about any moves during the tax year. Scottish rates differ for wages, pensions and most other taxable income; savings and dividends use UK rules. Welsh rates are set separately. Use the rules for the relevant year and your actual taxpayer status.
See Scottish Income Tax and Welsh Income Tax. These differences do not make a London address or an England-only earnings example appropriate for everyone.
Keep the agreement behind a non-cash payment
Illustrative preparation example.
A brand provides a product in exchange for a post. Keep the agreement, product details and valuation evidence with cash sponsorship and affiliate records. The absence of a bank receipt does not establish that the arrangement has no tax relevance.
Check: What was provided, what work was agreed and what evidence supports the value?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| What did each collaboration provide? | List cash, products, services and the work agreed in exchange. |
| Can platform income be reconciled? | Keep gross receipts, fees, refunds and payouts without duplication. |
| Are costs partly personal? | Provide purpose and mixed-use facts before claiming travel, clothing or equipment. |
Do non-cash collaborations always escape tax?
No. A commercial exchange can have taxable value without a bank payment. Explain the full arrangement.
Does platform reporting calculate my tax?
No. You still need complete records and the correct reporting position across all platforms and income streams.
