A token-to-token exchange can be a taxable disposal even if no pounds leave the exchange. Keep the GBP value, acquisition history, fees and transaction records. Income received in crypto can raise a separate question from any later gain or loss on disposal.
Reconstruct the transactions, not just the balance
Keep exports from every exchange and wallet involved. Record transfers clearly so moving assets between your own wallets is not confused with a sale. The accountant needs dates, quantities, values and relevant costs to understand the sequence.
HMRC identifies sales, exchanges and certain other disposals as events that may give rise to a gain. A later fall in the portfolio value does not, by itself, explain the tax treatment of an earlier disposal.
Separate income events from later disposals
Tokens received through certain activities can raise different tax questions from tokens simply bought and held. Tell the accountant about staking, rewards or payments received rather than including only trades against pounds.
Check the specialist work before purchasing
Large transaction histories, missing records and complex products can require additional calculations. Do not assume a standard SA package includes unlimited crypto reconciliation or every specialist issue.
Export records while access is available. An exchange balance today is not a substitute for the historical evidence needed for the return.
Example: a token-to-token exchange
A person exchanges one cryptoasset for another and keeps everything on the platform. No pounds are withdrawn, but the exchange can still be a disposal needing calculation. Later movements in the new asset’s value are a separate part of the history.
Is the platform’s profit figure enough?
Not always. Transfers, holdings on other exchanges and earlier acquisition records can affect the calculation. Keep exports and explain gaps rather than assuming one dashboard captures the whole history.
Does a loss mean there is nothing to report?
Do not decide solely from the current portfolio balance. Ask the accountant about realised transactions and any relevant reporting or loss claims. Confirm specialist support and the fee before commissioning a large reconciliation; a standard annual-return package should not be assumed to cover every crypto product.
Next step: Ask TaxSimba to confirm whether the crypto work can be supported, what records are required and the agreed fee before proceeding.
No cash withdrawal, but still a disposal
Imagine a token acquired for £400 is exchanged for another token when the amount disposed of is worth £700. There is a disposal to assess even though no pounds reach the bank. £300 is only a simple before-fees difference: the actual gain needs the UK matching rules, acquisition history, fees and other relevant transactions. Keep GBP values at the transaction time.
Record the value of both sides of a swap
Illustrative preparation example.
Keep the time, tokens exchanged, GBP value, fees and acquisition history when swapping one token for another. A wallet showing no withdrawal to a bank does not remove the need to review disposals. Transfers between your own wallets need identifying separately.
Check: Can the transaction be traced without treating every wallet movement as a new purchase or sale?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| What was sold, swapped or spent? | Build a disposal history with dates, quantities, sterling values and relevant costs. |
| Which movements are your own-wallet transfers? | Link the sending and receiving records to prevent duplicate or false disposals. |
| Were tokens received as income? | Identify rewards, payments and other receipts separately for tax review. |
Does keeping assets on an exchange prevent tax?
No. A disposal can occur without withdrawing pounds. The transaction type and facts matter.
Can one platform's profit figure cover everything?
Not necessarily. Holdings and transactions elsewhere, missing acquisition costs and UK matching rules can change the calculation.
