One lower-income year does not automatically end MTD. HMRC’s exit rules include qualifying income below the relevant threshold for three consecutive tax years, with separate rules for corrections and ceased sources. Confirm the position before stopping updates or cancelling support.
Explain why the income changed
Tell your accountant whether sales fell, a property was sold, a trade stopped or an earlier return was wrong. These are different situations. A lower bank balance does not necessarily mean lower qualifying income.
HMRC’s guidance says that after starting MTD, qualifying income below the relevant threshold for three tax years in a row can allow you to choose to opt out. Corrections to a previous return or the cessation of income sources can require a different assessment.
Keep the records while the position is checked
Do not simply stop answering record requests or abandon upcoming obligations. Ask the accountant to confirm what remains due and what needs notifying to HMRC. Keep any confirmation of a changed position.
Separate the service contract from HMRC obligations
Cancelling a subscription is not the same as leaving MTD. Likewise, a dashboard change does not establish that HMRC has accepted an opt-out. Check both the tax position and the contractual arrangement.
Example: one lower year
If a business has a single year below a headline threshold, do not assume its existing MTD obligations have ended. Ask which exit rule applies to the person’s history and circumstances. A corrected prior-year return is also different from a genuine fall in current trading income.
What if one business stops but another continues?
Give the accountant the complete picture. Stopping one income source is not the same as ceasing all relevant self-employment and property income. Record cessation dates and any money received afterwards.
What evidence should I keep?
Retain the returns, income records and HMRC correspondence used to assess the change. Ask for a clear explanation of what remains due. Keep that explanation with the service records, rather than relying on a phone conversation or the disappearance of a reminder.
Next step: Give TaxSimba the relevant returns, current records and details of any stopped activity so the accountant can assess the correct next step.
Keep the exit question separate from cancellation
Illustrative preparation example.
You expect a lower-income year and want to cancel software. Recover the relevant returns and check the MTD exit conditions first. Keep the confirmed outcome before ending the process used for existing obligations.
Check: What evidence supports the exit, and who has confirmed when reporting stops?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| Has income fallen or has the source ceased? | Record the actual change and dates; the reporting consequences can differ. |
| What qualifying-income history is relevant? | Use the required consecutive-year evidence under current HMRC rules. |
| Has an exit or exemption been confirmed? | Follow the official route and keep meeting existing obligations until the applicable position is clear. |
Is one year below the entry threshold enough?
Do not assume so. Entry thresholds and leaving conditions differ; check the current rule and the required income history.
Does a lower tax bill mean I can leave MTD?
No. Tax liability and gross qualifying-income conditions are different tests. Check each separately.
