Use the State Pension amount attributable to the tax year, which may differ from the bank deposits received in it. Keep the entitlement information and other pension statements. State Pension is generally taxable, but receiving it does not automatically require Self Assessment.
Entitlement and payment dates can differ
HMRC explains that taxable State Pension is based on the amount you were entitled to receive over the tax year. Four-weekly bank payments and the annual uprating can make a simple bank-total calculation different from the relevant entitlement figure.
The first year of receiving State Pension may also cover only part of the tax year. Give your accountant the award notice, start date and relevant uprating information. Explain any deferred pension or lump sum because it may require separate treatment.
Other pensions need their own records
Private and workplace pensions can have PAYE deducted. Provide P60s or equivalent statements showing the gross income and tax withheld. Do not combine those payments with State Pension and enter only the total reaching your bank.
For example, a workplace pension provider may collect tax through its code partly because you also receive State Pension. The return still needs the separate income figures and the tax actually deducted through PAYE.
State Pension does not automatically require a return
Whether you need Self Assessment depends on your overall circumstances. HMRC can collect tax through other routes, including tax codes or Simple Assessment. Check the requirement rather than purchasing a return solely because you started receiving a pension.
If you already file for rental or other income, include the pension information in that return. Pension income being shown in HMRC's records does not remove the need to check the figures before approval.
Review notices alongside the return
Keep tax coding notices and any Simple Assessment correspondence so amounts are not inadvertently paid or reported twice. Changes in employment, pension providers or residence should also be explained.
TaxSimba can confirm the appropriate service and documents after reviewing your circumstances. An accurate year-by-year pension record helps the accountant reconcile the calculation with what HMRC is already collecting.
Check the home nation used for your tax calculation
Tell the accountant whether you live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and about any moves during the tax year. Scottish rates differ for wages, pensions and most other taxable income; savings and dividends use UK rules. Welsh rates are set separately. Use the rules for the relevant year and your actual taxpayer status.
See Scottish Income Tax and Welsh Income Tax. These differences do not make a London address or an England-only earnings example appropriate for everyone.
Reconcile entitlement with the tax-year boundary
Illustrative preparation example.
State Pension bank credits can straddle the tax-year boundary. Keep the entitlement information and relevant dates rather than relying solely on deposits received between April dates. Give the accountant other pensions and taxable income as well.
Check: Which amount is attributable to the tax year under the applicable reporting rules?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| What entitlement relates to this tax year? | Use award and uprating evidence, especially in the first pension year. |
| Which pensions have PAYE deductions? | Keep State Pension and private or workplace pension records separate. |
| Has HMRC used another collection route? | Check coding or Simple Assessment notices alongside the return. |
Does State Pension always require Self Assessment?
No. The overall circumstances and HMRC's collection route matter. Check the filing requirement.
Is the bank total always the taxable figure?
Not necessarily. Entitlement timing and four-weekly payment dates can differ from a simple deposit total.
