If your circumstances have changed, check whether a return is still required for that year and ask HMRC to withdraw the requirement where appropriate. Keep confirmation. Do not simply ignore a notice to file or assume an old liability disappears when you stop filing.
Identify what changed
You may have stopped self-employment, sold a rental property or no longer have the income that originally required a return. Other reportable income or gains can still mean Self Assessment is needed, so review the whole position rather than one source in isolation.
For example, selling your last rental property might remove future rental income, but the sale and final rental year can still have reporting obligations. Closing the letting activity does not automatically close those tax years.
Ask for the correct year to be removed
HMRC allows you to say that a return is no longer needed, including for a specific tax year. Keep the request and confirmation. Stopping a subscription with an accountant or deleting an online account does not withdraw an HMRC filing notice.
If a deadline is approaching and the request has not been resolved, contact HMRC or your accountant promptly about the next step. Do not assume silence means permission to leave an issued return unfiled.
Deal with existing liabilities separately
Withdrawal of a future filing requirement does not necessarily cancel tax, interest or penalties for earlier years. Check the statement of account, payments on account and any outstanding notices.
If income has fallen, payments on account may need a separate review. Reducing them does not itself remove you from Self Assessment and can create interest if reduced too far.
Keep the decision evidence
Record the reason no return is required, the relevant income figures and HMRC's response. Review the position again if new self-employed income, rent, gains or other circumstances arise.
TaxSimba can help establish the service actually needed and identify any final-year work within the agreed scope. A responsible review may conclude that you need a final return, a different HMRC route or no further annual return after confirmation. The right outcome depends on your facts, not on automatically renewing the same service every year.
Keep confirmation that the return is no longer required
Illustrative preparation example.
If the income source has stopped, list remaining income, gains and any notices before asking HMRC to remove the filing requirement. Retain the response for the specific year. Stopping an accountancy subscription is not confirmation that HMRC withdrew the return.
Check: Which year has HMRC confirmed, and what older obligations remain?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| What changed and when? | Record the end of the activity and any final income or disposal. |
| Does another filing reason remain? | Review the whole personal position and the specific tax year. |
| Has HMRC withdrawn the requirement? | Keep the confirmation and deal with approaching deadlines while a request is unresolved. |
Does leaving cancel old balances or penalties?
Not automatically. Resolve earlier liabilities and notices separately from future filing requirements.
Will reducing payments on account remove Self Assessment?
No. That changes advance-payment estimates, not the return requirement itself.
