Tell HMRC when you stop self-employment and complete the relevant final return. Outstanding receipts, costs, assets and MTD updates can still need attention. Stopping one trade also does not end Self Assessment if another income source requires it.
Establish the actual cessation date
The date you stopped trading may differ from the date the last customer paid. Give your accountant a timeline covering the final work, invoices, receipts and remaining business assets. The accounting method affects how outstanding amounts are treated.
Use HMRC's process to report that you have stopped being self-employed. Closing a business bank account or cancelling a website does not notify HMRC on your behalf.
Prepare the final taxable result
Include the relevant income and allowable expenses, and review stock, equipment, unpaid amounts and any loss relief. A transfer of the business into a limited company needs particular attention; it is not always a simple closure with no tax consequences.
For example, a trader stopping in February 2026 may still need a 2025/26 return due online by 31 January 2027. Waiting until the next year to tell an accountant can make missing records harder to recover.
MTD businesses have additional closing steps
If the business is within MTD, HMRC's guidance requires the cessation to be recorded and the final relevant quarterly update to be sent. The income still belongs in the annual return for the year it ceased. Other continuing trades or rental businesses may remain within MTD.
Do not simply stop submitting because there were no new customers. A permanent cessation and a quiet trading period are different situations.
Check whether Self Assessment continues
You might still need returns for rent, gains or other income after self-employment ends. Conversely, if no return is needed, ask HMRC to confirm the change rather than ignoring an issued filing notice.
Tell TaxSimba the closure date, what has already been reported and whether other income continues. The accountant can confirm the final-year work, any earlier outstanding returns and the information needed to close the reporting position properly.
Keep a closure list beyond the last sale
Illustrative preparation example.
Record the cessation date, unpaid invoices, remaining stock or equipment and outstanding returns. Check any MTD duties and transition balances separately. Stopping customer work does not automatically close every tax task or remove another source of reportable income.
Check: Which final receipts, asset matters and reporting obligations remain open?
| Check | Practical action |
|---|---|
| When did the trade actually cease? | Prepare a timeline of final work, invoices and receipts. |
| What remains to be accounted for? | Identify unpaid amounts, assets, stock and any final-year loss questions. |
| Do other reporting duties continue? | Check other income, final MTD updates and existing notices to file. |
Does cancelling my business website close Self Assessment?
No. Follow HMRC's notification process and complete required final filings.
Can one ceased trade end MTD for my continuing rental business?
Not automatically. Each continuing source and the overall reporting position need checking.
